Since 1994 Cheboygan County Habitat has worked tirelessly to give qualified families a hand up, not a hand out, towards a better future. Program Partners go through education on finances and upkeep on their homes along with contributing sweat equity hours on other projects to help other local families. Volunteers are given unique opportunities to give back to our community through assisting at the ReStore to process donations, or out on the jobsite to swing a hammer, even helping during events that Habitat attends throughout the year. Our ReStore accepts donated furniture and other household goods that are sold for affordable prices so everyone can shop here regardless of income or class.
Our most recent projects are two builds in Indian River that have come such a long way in a short amount of time. Both houses have drywall up and are being painted in beautiful colors that our program partners picked out themselves! Volunteers, alongside Shannon and Bruce Hypio, and Jes Bunker, worked hard on November 8th to paint these blank canvases. With lots more work ahead of us and the chill setting in we are excited to get these homes finished! This year has been a great adventure for Cheboygan County Habitat and all of our supporters. We all have been working tirelessly hand in hand to eliminate unsafe, unaffordable housing in our community. As a thank you, we would like to announce our Volunteer of the Year and our Corporate Partner of the Year for 2023.
Darrin now serves as our Board President but held the Treasurer position previously. He took on the role as Board Development Chair and has helped increase our board member by 4 members and even took the lead on creating a board orientation for new members. Trisha serves on our Event Committee, but really, she is helping wherever we need a helping hand. She will make and bring lunch to the jobsite, help with home cleanings, event planning and set up, solicitation of committee members and auction items and so much more. Straits Area Federal Credit Union has been supporting Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity for many years through financial donations, sponsorships and more recently sending volunteer groups out to build with us on the jobsite. This continued partnership will soon include working with the Credit Union on financial coaching and educational courses to help strengthen the community members and in turn the community we live and work.
The continued support from the Credit Union has made a huge impact in the work we are doing and they have gotten to see firsthand how our mission works in action. They are actively working with Cheboygan Habitat to further our mission and the work we are doing throughout Cheboygan County. When I arrive at a job location, what I see is a bunch of good people doing something they love for the benefit of someone who will never have a home or get their home repaired any other way. When I get one of these repair jobs assigned to me, I say,

It allows people to seek steady employment, access to further education, and simply sleep soundly at night. Homeownership opens up so many new opportunities for everyone to better their lives and of those around them. Jes is working hard to help build her family’s home and create a future where her family can transition out of survival mode and can focus on thriving. They can build a bigger future once they purchase their new safe, affordable home. During partnership with Habitat, Program Partners will complete homebuyer education, budgeting and finance classes, along with completing sweat equity hours to learn necessary skills to maintain their new home. We offer a variety of unique partnership avenues to give the citizens of Cheboygan County a hand up, not a hand out. If you've ever wondered how to qualify for our Homeownership Program, or any of our programs, you can find more information on our Housing Programs page. If you have any further questions you can call 231-597-4663 or email info@habitatcheboygan.org. It’s not just a fad, social media like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok have integrated into our ever so busy lives. These world wide lines tap directly into our homes and hearts. Habitat for Humanity uses these platforms to improve the community around them. Here are a few ways that we utilize social media today.
Social media widens our audience from face to face to across the world. This means more people, who may need a hand up, will see our message, our mission and our organization. This means that more people are able to access safe, decent and affordable homes without having to uproot their lives to new areas. We are able to keep volunteers updated with new projects, added shifts, or any changes that might affect their valuable work. Not only that, we are able to spotlight and honor their profound impact within their community. Seeing the good that their friends and family are able to put forth often spurs new people into action. It brings our mission into the gaze of more local businesses, clubs and organizations that would like to partner with Habitat, donate material, or set up volunteer opportunities. Building safe, decent and affordable homes require a lot of time, materials, people and money. These things are all avenues where you can help us, help local families help themselves. Would you like to follow our social media pages and grow our reach? You can find all of our tags or handles below. If you have any questions you can email us at info@habitatcheboygan.org.
Owning a safe and decent home creates long-lasting and life-changing impact on families and communities everywhere. This includes providing a source of wealth and asset-building, influencing health and educational outcomes, and contributing to positive community cultivation. Homeowners have more opportunity to build social capital through communal engagement, which strengthens their motivation to maintain and improve their neighborhood. In short, homeownership constructively impacts so many aspects of individuals' lives and the communities around them. The Hypio family are one of the families we have been able to work with and assist in reaching their goals of Homeownership.

Are you interested in helping out the ReStore? Here's an idea of how you can help us:
How about building homes on our jobsites?
Not comfortable with swinging a hammer or wielding a saw but still want to help our jobsite? You can always provide lunch during volunteer shifts! Sandwiches and chips are a simple yet stomach filling meal! There is no refrigeration (coolers only) on site so please, keep this in mind when planning lunches! Are you looking for something to assist our admin office?
Do you like to party? Habitat holds multiple fundraisers over the year and always need help with...
None of those options sound appealing? That's ok! We also need board and committee members! Only a few hours per month to attend meetings can assist Habitat with making decisions, fundraising, planning events and making big change in Cheboygan County! |
