Program Overview
Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people from all walks of life to build homes, communities, and hope. We believe it is a basic human right that everyone has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. We want to help you build a better life for you and your family that will last generations. Side by side we will help you build a new home and help you learn the skills to become a successful homeowner. Becoming a homeowner is hard work but with some help from volunteers and donors, we can build a stronger future together.
Habitat houses aren't free. Habitat home buyers work hard to create a permanent solution to their housing struggles, and they purchase their homes from Cheboygan Habitat with a low – zero percent interest mortgage, typically not exceeding 30% of monthly income. Applicants are first selected to be part of our program and then will have to get approved for an affordable loan at the end of the project.

Program Partners are selected based on:
- Level of need
- Ability to pay an affordable mortgage or loan
- Willingness to partner, which includes taking classes in financial management and budgeting, home maintenance, as well as performing sweat equity hours to help build, renovate or repair projects under construction.
Level of Need
Applicants must be able to afford a loan for their repair work. CCHFH serves community members making up to 60% of the Area Median Income as set forth by HUD. Applicants falling above 60% AMI but can't qualify for a conventional loan are encouraged to call us for more details. |
Ability to Afford a Loan
Applicants must also have a housing repair need. This can vary for each household. For example, your current shelter has problems with the heating, mechanical or electrical systems, mold issues, etc. We strongly encourage everyone to apply, even if you are unsure if the repair will fall into our program. |
Willingness to Partner
One of the main components to our programs is Sweat Equity. Each able bodied adult is required to put in Sweat Equity hours towards their project or another. This can help them learn the skills needed to maintain their home or help them learn things to look out for when it comes to home maintenance. |
This program is intended to provide funds for the rehabilitation of owner-occupied, single family residential dwellings. Repairs will focus on improvements that will reduce the long-term costs of homeownership such as energy efficiency improvements and removal of health and safety risks. This program will encompass three types of repairs that are much needed throughout Cheboygan County:
