Program Overview
Cheboygan County Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people from all walks of life to build homes, communities, and hope. We believe it is a basic human right that everyone has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. We want to help you build a better life for you and your family that will last generations. Side by side we will help you build a new home and help you learn the skills to become a successful homeowner. Becoming a homeowner is hard work but with some help from volunteers and donors, we can build a stronger future together.
Habitat houses aren't free. Habitat home buyers work hard to create a permanent solution to their housing struggles, and they purchase their homes from Cheboygan Habitat with a low – zero percent interest mortgage, typically not exceeding 30% of monthly income. Applicants are first selected to be part of our program and then will have to get approved for an affordable mortgage.

Program Partners are selected based on:
- Level of need
- Ability to pay an affordable mortgage or loan
- Willingness to partner, which includes taking classes in financial management and budgeting, home maintenance, as well as performing ‘sweat equity hours’ to help build, renovate or repair projects under construction.
Ability to Afford a Mortgage
Applicants must be able to afford a mortgage for their home build or rehab. CCHFH serves community members falling between 30 - 60% of the Area Median Income as set forth by HUD. Applicants falling above 60% AMI but can't qualify for a conventional mortgage are encouraged to call us for more details. |
Need for Housing
Applicants must have a housing need. This can vary for each household and situation. For example, your current shelter has problems with the heating, plumbing or electrical systems, mold issues etc. You could also be paying to much for your current living situation or having overcrowding issues. |
Willingness to Partner
One of the main components to our programs is Sweat Equity. If you are approved for this program, each able bodied adult in the household must be willing to put in 250 hours of sweat equity with 100 of those hours to be completed before construction begins on your project. Our goal is for you to learn the skills needed to maintain your home. |
Every day, people in your community and all over the world partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Through our program, Habitat Program Partners achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better life for themselves and their families. Cheboygan County Habitat offers low to zero interest mortgage options for those who qualify for the housing programs and then qualify for a mortgage. In order to qualify you must have a housing need, be able to afford and affordable mortgage payment and down payment, and be willing to partner with Habitat during your journey to home ownership.
